Violence Grips Tehran Amid Crackdown
Police officers used sticks and tear gas to force back thousands of
demonstrators under plumes of black smoke in the capital on
Saturday. The opposition leader, Mir Hussein Moussavi, appeared at a
demonstration in southern Tehran and called for a general strike if
he were to be arrested. “I am ready for martyrdom,” he told
supporters.
Iran’s divisions played out on the streets. Regular security forces
stood back and urged protesters to go home to avoid bloodshed, while
the feared pro-government militia, the Basij, beat protesters with
clubs and, witnesses said, electric prods.
Obama Says ‘Justice’ Is Needed for Iranians
Mr. Obama’s statement was his strongest to date on the post-election
turmoil in Iran. Saying that “each and every innocent life” lost
would be mourned, he added: “Suppressing ideas never succeeds in
making them go away. The Iranian people will ultimately judge the
actions of their own government. If the Iranian government seeks the
respect of the international community, it must respect the dignity
of its own people and govern through consent, not coercion."
Qashqavi: VOA, BBC guiding unrest in Iran
Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hassan Qashqavi pins the blame for
the recent post-election turmoil across the country on US and
British media outlets. "Voice of America (VOA) and the British
Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) are state-funded channels and not
privately-run. Their budgets are ratified in the US Congress, as
well as the British Parliament. The two channels serve as
mouthpieces of their respective governments," Qashqavi stated on
Saturday.
He noted that the two news outlets seek to stir up ethnic discord
across Iran in the hope of fomenting the country's disintegration.
"Any sort of contact with the said channels either through e-mail or
telephone runs against national Iranian sovereignty and is
considered as an act of enmity towards the Iranian nation. The
channels act as command posts engineering the ongoing post-election
riots," Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman noted.
Iraqis blame Tehran for their country's turmoil
Since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein, there has been growing
concern about what many in Iraq see as Tehran's interference in
their country. Now, some Iraqis say they are watching Iran's
post-election events unfold with a degree of satisfaction, because
they believe the root cause of the turmoil and internal conflict in
their country is Iran.
As Arms Meeting Looms, Russia Offers Carrot of Sharp Cuts
President Dmitri A. Medvedev said Saturday that Russia was prepared
to carry out significant reductions in its nuclear arsenal as part
of its continuing arms control negotiations with the United States,
which are to culminate here in a summit meeting with President Obama
next month.
Later on Saturday, the Kremlin released a statement from Mr.
Medvedev that emphasized that Russia would not move forward if the
United States did not cancel its plan for an antimissile system
based in Poland and the Czech Republic.
“The reductions that we are suggesting are possible only if the
United States addresses Russian concerns,” he said. “In any event,
the issue of the relationship between strategic offensive and
defensive weapons should be clearly laid out in the treaty.”
Deaths confirmed in Iran unrest
Iran's state media has said at least 13 people were killed amid
unrest in Tehran on Saturday, as thousands of protesters clashed
with police in the fallout of the disputed presidential election.
Manouchehr Mottaki, Iran's foreign minister, denounced outside
governments seeking to intervene in the crisis. Speaking to
representatives of foreign diplomatic missions in Tehran on Sunday,
he also defended the country's electoral system. "There may be
complaints ... [but] this is what we've been doing well in [the]
last 30 years," he said. He said a mechanism is in place to
investigate allegations of election irregularities, so long as they
are made "in legal ways".
On Saturday, about 3,000 opposition protesters had spilled on to
Tehran's streets, undaunted by a warning from Ayatollah Ali Khamenei,
Iran's supreme leader, not to continue demonstrations. Security
forces responded with live rounds, batons and tear gas, with the
pandemonium continuing well into the night. Witnesses said that
dozens of people were hospitalised after being beaten by police and
the pro-government Basiji militia in the capital.
Reports on community-driven websites such as Twitter claim a number
of protesters were killed by police in the clashes.
Mir Hossein Mousavi has repeated his demand for the poll results to
be annulled.
"If this huge volume of cheating and changing the votes ... which
has hurt people's trust, is presented as the very evidence of the
lack of cheating, then it will butcher the republican aspect of the
system and the idea that Islam is incompatible with a republic will
be proven," he said in a statement posted on the website of his
Kalemeh newspaper.
