North Korea to ‘Weaponize’ Its Plutonium
In a statement on the North’s official Korean Central News Agency,
an unidentified spokesman for the North Korean Foreign Ministry was
quoted as saying that his nation would continue its nuclear program
to defend itself against what he called a hostile United States
policy. He was quoted as saying that his nation would “weaponize”
its existing plutonium stockpiles and begin a program to enrich
uranium, which can also be used to make atomic warheads. “We’ll take
firm military action if the United States and its allies try to
isolate us,” the spokesman said, according to the KCNA, the news
service. The spokesman said that his nation had “reprocessed more
than one-third of our spent nuclear fuel rods.”
Experts Say Chinese Filter Would Make PCs Vulnerable
“It contains serious vulnerabilities, which is especially worrisome
given how widely the software will be adopted,” said J. Alex
Halderman, a computer science professor at the University of
Michigan who examined the program. “What we found was only the tip
of the iceberg.”
Foreign computer makers, which learned of the directive just three
weeks ago, have been asking Chinese officials to reconsider the
rules, which were formulated without their consultation. They say
there are too many unanswered questions about the software,
including whether it has the potential to damage operating systems.
Riots break out in Teheran as Ahmadinejad wins elections
Mousavi supporters clashed with police and set up barricades of
burning tires as authorities declared that Ahmadinejad had been
re-elected in a landslide. Opponents responded with the most serious
unrest in the capital in a decade and charges that the result was
the work of a "dictatorship."
Mousavi's campaign headquarters urged people to show self-restraint.
Interior Minister Sadeq Mahsouli, who supervised the elections and
heads the nation's police forces, warned people not to join any
"unauthorized gatherings." Earlier, the powerful Revolutionary Guard
said it would not tolerate any challenges by Mousavi's "green"
movement - the color adopted by Mousavi's campaign. "I'm warning
that I won't surrender to this manipulation," said a statement on
Mousavi's Web site. "The outcome of what we've seen from the
performance of officials ... is nothing but shaking the pillars of
the Islamic Republic of Iran's sacred system and governance of lies
and dictatorship." He warned "people won't respect those who take
power through fraud."
Shalom, Ayalon warn of Iranian threat
"The Iranian election results are a slap in the face of those who
believed Iran was built for real dialogue with the free world and
would halt its nuclear program," Shalom said, "Ahmadinejad's victory
sends a clear message to the world that there is wide support for
the current policy, and it will continue unchanged. The United
States and the free world must reevaluate the policy on Teheran's
nuclear ambitions. " Ayalon said that while Israel had no
illusions about the Iranian election results, because there were
practically no differences between the leading candidates on
terrorism and the nuclear program, the reelection of Ahmadinejad
"reflects the intensification of the threat posed by the Islamic
republic."
Iran rejects claims of voter fraud
Iranian Interior Minister Sadeq Mahsouli has declared that the 10th
presidential elections were conducted in a manner that ruled out the
possibility of voter fraud. "No violations that may have influenced
the vote have been reported, and we have received no written
complaint," he said in response to a question posed by an Italian
reporter. He explained that there may have been some tensions
between the representatives of the presidential hopefuls but added
that there is no evidence to suggest that the issues of contention
have led to violations.
Hamas congratulates Ahmadinejad on re-election
The Palestinian Hamas has cheered President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad over
his landslide victory in the Iranian presidential elections.
In reference to the Friday elections that resulted in the incumbent
president's re-election, the movement suggested the results to be a
sign of national support for the policies pursued by Ahmadinejad.
"The results show a wide public commendation for Iran's policy of
challenge," Fawzi Barhoum -- a Hamas spokesman -- said in a
statement sent to the press. "The results also prove that the
official level in Iran succeeded in sponsoring and maintaining the
people's interests and hopes and protecting them from threats,"
Barhoum added.
Pakistan 'expands war on Taliban'
Pakistan's military is beginning a significant move into South
Waziristan, where the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, or the Pakistani
Taliban, is based, US officials say.
The operation is said to be targeting Baitullah Mehsud, the leader
of the Pakistani Taliban, and will be carried out with greater
support from the US.
Witnesses and intelligence officials said Pakistani aircraft bombed
a stronghold of Mehsud in South Waziristan on Saturday.
"Four fighter jets bombed parts of Makeen early on Saturday but we
don't know about the extent of damage or any casualties," Mohammad
Khan, a shopkeeper in the area, said.
James Bays, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Islamabad, said official
sources had confirmed to him that heavy artillery was being used in
Makeen.
