In Iran, an Iron Cleric, Now Blinking

In a rare break from a long history of cautious moves, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei rushed to bless President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for winning the election, calling on Iranians to line up behind the incumbent even before the standard three days required to certify the results had passed. Then angry crowds swelled in cities around Iran, and he backpedaled, announcing Monday that the 12-member Council of Guardians, which vets elections and new laws, would investigate the vote.

Social Networks Spread Iranian Defiance Online

As the embattled government of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad appears to be trying to limit Internet access and communications in Iran, new kinds of social media are challenging those traditional levers of state media control and allowing Iranians to find novel ways around the restrictions. Iranians are blogging, posting to Facebook and, most visibly, coordinating their protests on Twitter, the messaging service. Their activity has increased, not decreased, since the presidential election on Friday and ensuing attempts by the government to restrict or censor their online communications.

Ahmadinejad supporters hold unity rally

Hundreds of thousands of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's supporters gather in a central Tehran square to call for unity and respect for the people's vote.

The ralliers met once again at Valli-Asr Square, where they had gathered on Sunday to celebrate the results of the country's Friday elections with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who according to figures released by the interior ministry won a second term in office with 63 percent of the votes.

This time however, the president will not be among them as he is on a visit to Russia to take part in the Shanghai Cooperation Council summit.

The pro-Ahmadinejad demonstrators came together at Valli-Asr square just a day after supporters of former premier Mir-Hossein Mousavi rallied elsewhere in central Tehran.

Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi who ran against president Ahmadinejad have not accepted the election results.

Mousavi, who has called for an annulment, submitted his complaint to the Guardian Council along with the fourth defeated candidate Mohsen Rezaei.

The Guardian Council, which is in charge of supervising elections in Iran, has responded to the requests on Tuesday by announcing that it is ready for a partial recount in the presence of candidate representatives.

According to the announcement, votes of disputed ballot boxes would be counted again.

Press TV's correspondent Homa Lezgi who was at the scene of Tuesday's rally reported that Moussavi's supporters had also gathered at the square a few hours ago, but moved on up Valli-Asr street toward Vanak square.

The pro-Ahmadinejad ralliers were chanting slogans in support of the president, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, while inviting supporters of Mousavi to national unity by chanting, "we are of the same nation", she added.

They also carried banners which read "no one should question the 40 million votes of the Iranian nation nor doubt their decision".

Former parliament speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel addressed the crowd, urging Mousavi to accept defeat. He also said that the election should not divide the people.

Lezgi who later reported from Vanak square said that the gathering of Mousavi's supporters had also turned into a massive rally.

She added that the demonstrators, who were carrying green banners of the Mousavi campaign, were calm, as their chosen candidate had requested.

Mousavi however cancelled a planned demonstration on Tuesday warning his of what he called "a trap of planned clashes."

Iran says ready for partial vote recount

Iran's Guardian Council says it is prepared to recount disputed ballot boxes as defeated presidential candidate Mir-Hossein Moussavi calls for the annulment of the vote.

"We are ready to recount those boxes that some presidential candidates claim to have been cheated," said Council spokesman Abbas-Ali Kadkhodaei Tuesday.

"According to election regulations, the Guardian Council can respond to complaints received within three days of the election. However, despite the expiry of the legal deadline, the body is ready to receive complaints and probe into the issue and build more confidence," he added.

He assured the presidential candidates that the body would investigate the matter thoroughly.

The development comes as Iran has been witnessing mass rallies by pro-Moussavi voters who reject the election as fraudulent.

The Guardian Council is tasked with supervising the electoral process. In order for the outcome of the election to stand, the Guardian Council must approve the results.

Kadkhodaei said on Monday that the body had received two official complaints from defeated presidential candidates Mir-Hossein Moussavi and Mohsen Rezaie - both candidates have questioned the legitimacy of the June 12 poll.

'Carter target of assassination attempt'

Palestinian sources claimed Tuesday that former US president Jimmy Carter was the target of a thwarted assassination attempt while visiting the Gaza Strip, news agencies reported.
According to the report, a range of explosive devices had been stashed near a road he was scheduled to travel on during his trip.

Netanyahu policy delays EU relations upgrade

Conditions set by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the creation of a Palestinian state keeps European Union at bay from upgrading ties with Tel Aviv.

Following Netanyahu's foreign policy speech on Sunday, European Union officials said Monday that they would delay any improvement in relations with Tel Aviv since the Israeli government has ignored repeated EU demands for a freeze in settlement activities in the occupied West Bank and lifting the deadly Gaza blockade.

On Sunday, the far-right Israeli prime minister offered his support for a Palestinian statehood for the first time but only if it is demilitarized and if Palestinians accept Israel as a Jewish state. Palestinians have rejected the conditions.

However, the EU -- supporting a two-state solution which calls for a Palestinian state living side by side with Israel in peace -- said that Netanyahu's comments were "a step in the right direction", but not enough to increase relations with Israel to a higher level.

EU has urged Tel Aviv to take more steps toward peace with Palestinians.

Upgrading Israeli-EU political, economic and trade relations has been under discussion since December, but it was shelved following Israeli's three-week war on Gaza which left over 1,400 Palestinians dead.

European foreign ministers will meet with Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman in Luxembourg this week.
