Disputing Election, Pro-reform Marchers Fill Tehran Streets

Tens of thousands of supporters of Iranian pro-reform leader Mir Hossein Mousavi streamed into the center of Tehran Monday in a boisterous protest against Friday's election results that declared President Mamoud Ahmadinejad the winner. The crowd -- many wearing the trademark green color of Mousavi's campaign -- was the largest display of opposition unity since Friday's elections ended with Mousavi claiming widespread fraud. Some Ahmadinejad supporters on motorbikes and armed with sticks clashed with marching Mousavi backers. The witness said there were scuffles between the rival groups and that Ahmadinejad supporters used sticks to hit opponents.

The European Union plans to demand clarification of Ahmadinejad's victory and voice concern at the treatment of his opponents, Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos said after talks in Luxembourg with EU counterparts. U.S. leaders have reacted cautiously, in the hope of keeping alive President Barack Obama's strategy of engagement with Iran.

On Monday, Ahmadinejad delayed a visit to Russia for a regional summit, but he was expected to arrive there on Tuesday.

Civil Pro-Moussavi rally turns ugly, shots fired

Shots have been fired during a mass rally staged by Mir-Hossein Moussavi supporters, who cry foul over what they call 'vote-rigging' in Iran's presidential election.

PressTV's man-on-the-spot, recording live from the scene, reported that as the protesters were beginning to disperse at sundown after a peaceful rally, unidentified gunmen fired shots into the crowd.

The shooters were reportedly not in uniform.

"There has been sporadic shooting out there ... I can see people running here," said our correspondent, adding that he had seen a wounded boy, being carried.

The rally staged by pro-Moussavi supporters incredulous at the official results of Iran's presidential ballot on Friday, which gave the incumbent president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad a huge 63 percent of the cast votes.

The Monday rally, which went ahead after the Interior Ministry denied the Moussavi camp with permission for a gathering, was the largest in a series of protests since the announcement of results on Saturday.

While Moussavi has backed the right of his supporters to express their dissatisfaction with peaceful protests, he has stressed that they should remain calm and vigilant against provocations.

The rally today was peaceful until the eruption of violence in the evening.

Moussavi has filed a complaint with the election supervising body, the Guardian Council. He has also called for the annulment of the election, asking for a new vote.

Press TV is still receiving news from the scene.

Netanyahu speech at Bar-Ilan University

Netanyahu told an audience at Bar-Ilan University in Tel Aviv on Sunday that he would require international guarantees that any Palestinian state would have no army or control of its airspace and borders, and would recognise Israel as a Jewish state. "If we receive this guarantee ... then we will be ready in a future peace agreement to reach a solution where a demilitarised Palestinian state exists alongside the Jewish state," he said. "Israel needs defensible borders, and Jerusalem must remain the united capital of Israel with continued religious freedom for all faiths."

Palestinian officials have condemned a major policy speech by Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, saying it had "closed the door" on moves to reach an agreement between the two sides. "Netanyahu's speech closed the door to permanent status negotiations,'' Saeb Erekat, the Palestinians' senior negotiator, said. "We ask the world not to be fooled by his use of the term Palestinian state because he qualified it. He declared Jerusalem the capital of Israel, said refugees would not be negotiated and that settlements would remain." "The peace process has been moving at the speed of a turtle. Tonight, Netanyahu has flipped it over on its back," he said.

'Netanyahu is ruining peace chances'

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak blasted Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's speech on Sunday saying "Netanyahu's demand that Palestinians recognize Israel as the Jewish state is ruining the chance for peace," Egyptian news agencies reported on Monday. Mubarak further added that "not Egypt, nor any other Arab country would support Netanyahu's approach."

'PM placed obstacles on road to peace'

Former US president Jimmy Carter, visiting in Israel, said on Monday that Binyamin Netanyahu has placed "several obstacles on the road to peace"..."In my opinion, Netanyahu brought up several obstacles to peace in his speech that others before him have not placed," ..."He insists on settlement expansion, demands that the Palestinians recognize Israel as a Jewish state even though 20% of Israel's citizens are not Jewish," the former US president said.

Carter stressed that the differences between US President Obama and PM Netanyahu can be overcome. "I have to say that in spite of the differences between my president, Barack Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu, greater differences existed between myself and then-prime minister Begin," he said.

American voters' support for both Israel and PA declines

49 percent of US voters consider themselves supporters of Israel, down from 57% in January. Just 7% see themselves as supporters of the Palestinians, down from 8% in January. Fully 31% are either undecided or support neither position. Those who identified as Republicans showed the strongest support for Israel (65% to 3% for the Palestinians), followed by Independents (50% to 9%) and Democrats (38% to 9%).  Support for Israel is currently higher than the seven-year low of 38% during the August 2005 disengagement from the Gaza Strip or the high of 69% measured in September 2008.

Iran’s president cancels visit to Russia over political tensions

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has cancelled his visit to Russia scheduled for Monday over tense political situation inside the Islamic republic.

Ahmadinejad won last Friday’s presidential election, but the opposition demands a revote calling the elections a fraud.

Earlier, it was planned that the Iranian president would take part in the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Yekaterinburg.

Russia yet uninformed of DPRK plans for missile or nuclear tests

The DPRK has not yet informed Russia of its intentions to stage missile or nuclear tests, a source in the Russian Foreign Ministry told Itar-Tass on Monday.

“We would wish very much that all the threats of Pyongyang should not be realized,” said the ministry official. “If this happens, this will be very sad. But there have been no notifications from the DPRK yet (of the intentions to stage nuclear or missile tests), said the source.

He expressed the hope that Pyongyang would realize the danger of the attempts to create the nuclear-missile potential. “One would like the DPRK to realize the idea we want to bring home to it that the attempt to create a nuclear-missile potential makes things worse for North Korea,” said the source. “It will provoke the arms race which the DPRK stands to lose,” he said.

“We hope that the DPRK would realize, just as all others, and would refrain from steps that could only aggravate the situation,” said the source. “Restraint and maximum caution are needed on all the parts, not only from Pyongyang,” he said.
