Sri Lankan army claims victory against rebels
The Sri Lankan army claims to have captured the entire
coastal line of the northern island from Tamil Tiger rebels'
control.
The seizure is considered as the total control over last
remaining coastline territory previously controlled by the
LTTE rebels, the Ministry of Defense said Saturday.
The Sri Lankan Government has not yet released a formal
declaration of victory apparently because the country's
President Mahinda Rajapaksa is still in Amman, Jordan, where
he has attended the World Economic Forum.
Sri Lankan military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara said
earlier two army divisions have cut off all sea escapes for
Tamil Tigers.
Rajapaksa vowed on Thursday to win in the two-decade-long
war against the guerrillas within 48 hours.
At least 70,000 people have been killed since Tamil Tigers
began fighting for a sovereign homeland in 1983.

Taliban reportedly shaving beards and fleeing
The Pakistan army says they have confirmed reports that
Taliban terrorists are shaving off their beards, cutting
their hair and fleeing the war zone.
As a curfew was called on Friday morning for the war-ravaged
civilians to flee, Taliban fighters took advantage of the
situation and escaped along with the civilians from the
Pakistani army offensive of their Swat bastion, the military
said on Friday.
It also appealed to civilians to identify Taliban fighters
trying to flee, providing a telephone number for informants
to call or send text messages.
There was no immediate comment from the Taliban on the
military statement.
Meanwhile, the military announced they were achieving
success as they launched fresh attacks on Friday in various
parts of the region.
The military said that 55 militants and three soldiers had
been killed in the last 24 hours until Friday afternoon.
That would take the toll to about 925 militants and 48
soldiers, it said.
About 15,000 members of the security forces are fighting
about 5,000 militants, the military said.
Pentagon seeks to boost presence in Pakistan
The Pentagon is planning to fast forward the training of
Pakistani military to enhance their abilities against
insurgents who are building up on the Afghan border.
The US defense officials are consulting with Pakistan about
paving the way for the increased presence of US special
operations trainers in the Asian country.
This, the US authorities maintain, could cut the training
hours by as much as two years for more than 9,000 members of
Pakistan's paramilitary Frontier Corps, AP quoted a senior
defense official as saying.
The US trainers are seeking to shorten the training time of
the Frontier Corps forces and extend their training to the
Pakistani army, said the official, who asked not to be named
because the discussions are preliminary and no decision has
been made.
The US believes that by putting the training courses in the
fast lane, it will be able to get the upper hand over the
Taliban and al-Qaeda in the region. Controlling the border,
officials insist, is key to stabilizing Pakistan and winning
the war in Afghanistan.
Richard Holbrooke, the Obama administration's special envoy
to Afghanistan and Pakistan, last week told US senators that
it was essential to create a galvanized Pakistani
paramilitary Frontier Corps to effectively confront the
insurgent saying that, "We think the Frontier Corps deserves
much more attention."
Pakistani leaders are wary of closer cooperation with the US
military, fearing it could fuel anti-American sentiment
domestically.
'Inaction on ME conflict not an option'
Jordan's king praised the renewed US commitment to achieving
peace in the Middle East on Friday and urged Israel to work
toward that goal. "The new American commitment has now
opened an opportunity to change the direction of events,"
and "time to act is not indefinite. Every delay has brought
more danger, not only for the parties but for the region and
indeed the world."
Abdullah stressed that the only way to achieve a Mideast
settlement is through an Arab peace initiative that offers
Israel relations with the 23 Arab League members in exchange
for its withdrawal from land it occupied in the 1967 Six Day
War, a just solution for Palestinian refugees and the
establishment of a Palestinian state with east Jerusalem as
its capital.
Abdullah conveyed this same message to Netanyahu when they
met in Amman on Thursday. But the prime minister argued that
the threat from Iran and its regional proxies - Hizbullah in
Lebanon and Hamas in the Gaza Strip - must be confronted
first, before any progress can be made in peacemaking.
The king said his visit to Washington late last month
assured him that President Barack Obama is committed to
pushing for peace between Israelis, Palestinians and the
broader Arab world based on a two-state solution.
Turkey pushes Israel on Golan Heights
Turkey's President Abdullah Gul has urged Israel to resume
peace talks with Syria as Tel Aviv says it will not return
the occupied Golan Heights to Syria.
Speaking at a joint press conference with his Syrian
counterpart Bashar al-Assad on Friday, Gul called on Israel
to accept its responsibilities in forging peace, saying
"Israel has to show clearly it is a partner."
Gul made the remarks a week after Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu declared that Israel would never withdraw from the
Golan Heights and said, "Remaining on the Golan will ensure
Israel has a strategic advantage in cases of military
conflict with Syria".
The Turkish president arrived in Syria on Friday on a three-
day visit for talks on bilateral ties and Middle East
issues.
Oman Navigates Between Iran and Arab Nations
As Iran finds itself locked in an escalating cold war-style
conflict with Egypt, Saudi Arabia and other Arab nations,
the quietly influential Sultanate of Oman has accelerated
its cooperation with Tehran, nurturing an alliance that
helps empower Iran while highlighting the deep divisions
among Arab capitals.
While the West is concerned that Iran will develop nuclear
weapons in the future, officials in Egypt, Saudi Arabia,
Morocco, Jordan and Bahrain complain about what Iran is
doing today. Morocco took the most extreme step, severing
diplomatic relations with Iran in March.
Egyptian officials recently accused Hezbollah, Iran’s proxy
force in Lebanon, of sending an agent to Egypt to set up a
terrorist cell. Hezbollah acknowledged sending the agent but
said it had been trying only to help smuggle weapons into
Gaza to aid Hamas in its war with Israel. It denied planning
terrorist attacks on Egypt. Egyptians have also charged that
Iran has undermined reconciliation between Palestinian
factions; tried to instigate an uprising against the
Egyptian government; become involved in domestic politics
and conflicts in Sudan, Chad and other countries; and tried
to spread Shiite Islamic beliefs in Sunni-majority
countries. Iran has denied meddling in Arab affairs.
