Iraq hails Obama's withdrawal commitment
The Iraqi government has welcomed the renewal of the US administration's commitment towards Iraq following president Obama's landmark speech to the Muslim world.
"The Iraqi government welcomes the speech by President Obama," Iraq's government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said in a statement on Thursday. Iraq "welcomes the renewal of the American administration's commitment towards Iraq and the respect for the dates of American forces' withdrawal," he added. "The speech reflected a positive direction for the American administration towards the understanding of the culture of the people in the region," he further explained.
Hezbollah coalition may win Lebanese vote
A Hezbollah-led coalition may expand its power in Lebanon's June 7 parliamentary elections, helping the group not to disarm its militia, a media analysis says.
The US supports Prime Minister Fouad Siniora and his pro-Western coalition. It also backs United Nations resolutions calling on Hezbollah to disarm its militia, which fought a month-long war with Israel in 2006, the Bloomberg website reported.
Significant electoral gains for the Hezbollah bloc would challenge President Barack Obama's efforts to pacify the Middle East and move toward resolving the Israeli-Palestinian dispute. The group mocks pro-U.S. Arab states such as Egypt for failing to help the Palestinians, and says its private army is essential to defend Lebanon against Israeli attacks, it added.
“When the party is in control of the government, it will be harder for Hezbollah's internal and external opponents to call for its disarmament,” said Amal Saad-Ghorayeb, a professor at the Lebanese American University. "It would mean the end of a pro-Western government."
A poll conducted earlier this year of about 4,000 people showed the Hezbollah coalition, which includes Christian and other Muslim parties, would win a majority of two or three seats in the 128-member parliament if the election were held at that time. Taken between February and April by the Beirut Center for Research and Information, the poll had a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
The Hezbollah-led bloc currently has 58 seats and the Siniora coalition 70 seats.
When US Vice-President Joe Biden visited Lebanon in May in a bid to bolster Siniora's coalition, he said aid to Lebanon -- the US has poured USD 1b into the country since 2006 -- would be re-evaluated depending on what type of government was formed after the election. Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah accused the U.S. of interfering in Lebanese affairs.
N Korea 'ready to launch missile'
There is growing speculation that North Korea may be preparing to launch another new medium or long-range missile.
Satellite images from the
GlobalSecurity website show the new Tongchang-ni launch site in the North's west coast near China and is reportedly ready for use after nearly a decade of construction.
The news of the suspected launch preparation came as South Korean media reported on Friday of US intentions to implement financial sanctions on Pyongyang in an effort to punish the country over its weapons trading and counterfeit activities.
As international pressure heightens, tensions continue to rise on the Korean peninsula, and on Thursday, South Korean officials said a patrol boat from the North entered its waters around their disputed maritime border, but backed off after nearly an hour following repeated warnings.
Meanwhile, international powers continue to work on an appropriate response to the North's nuclear test and missile launches.
On Thursday. ambassadors from key nations say they are nearing an agreement on new UN-backed sanctions against North Korea for violating UN resolutions and conducting a second nuclear test.
The proposals for a new UN resolution are being discussed by the five veto-wielding Security Council nations - the US, China, Russia, Britain and France - and also Japan and South Korea, the two countries most closely affected by the test.
They have been holding closed-door meetings since May 26, a day after North Korea's underground nuclear test.

Formerly known as the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), the group has renamed itself the New Politics Party, and says its key aim is to crack down on corruption in the country. "The election commission can legally take 30 days to approve our petition, but in our case I hope it will be quicker and could just be one week," Suriyasai Katasila, the acting party secretary general, told AFP news agency.

Viktor Yushchenko urges West to help prevent "constitutional coup"
Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has urged “the world public”, specifically, the leading Western countries, to “help maintain the democratic processes in Ukraine.” In his opinion, a new coalition – that of Yulia Timoshenko Bloc and of the Party of Regions – is being created in the Ukrainian parliament. It will be headed by Viktor Yanukovich, who was Yushchenko’s rival at the presidential elections. Yushchenko believes that the purpose of this hypothetic coalition will be “the dismantling of all democratic initiatives and the staging of a constitutional coup.”
“I appeal to the world public to render assistance in maintaining democratic processes in our country,” Yushchenko said at a meeting with the ambassadors of seven leading Western countries here on Friday.
The ambassadors of the United States, Canada, Japan, Britain, Germany, France and Italy, as well as of Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Sweden, and the head of the office of the European Commission in Ukraine attended the meeting.
“All the masks were removed last week at the talks on the creation of a coalition by the Party of Regions and Yulia Timoshenko Bloc,” Yushchenko said. “The making of amendments to the Constitution will be initiated next week, so that Timoshenko would remain prime minister for the next decade. Besides, it is planned to turn over to the parliament the right to elect a president.”
Yushchenko described it as “an illegal initiative” running counter to the right of individuals to take part in elections.
