Commander’s Ouster Is Tied to Shift in Afghan War
The top American commander in Afghanistan, Gen. David D.
McKiernan, was forced out Monday in an abrupt shake-up
intended to bring a more aggressive and innovative approach
to a worsening seven-year war.
The move reflects a belief that the war in Afghanistan,
waged against an increasingly strong Taliban and its
supporters across a rugged, sprawling country, is growing
ever more complex. Defense Department officials said General
McKiernan, a respected career armor officer, had been
removed primarily because he had brought too conventional an
approach to the challenge.
He is to be replaced by Lt. Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, a
former commander of the Joint Special Operations Command. He
served in Afghanistan as chief of staff of military
operations in 2001 and 2002 and recently ran all commando
operations in Iraq.
Why the Pentagon Axed Its Afghan Warlord
Taliban raids Afghan state offices
About 30 fighters wearing suicide vests and using AK-47s and
grenades, have attacked government buildings in the Afghan
city of Khost, at least six people, including security
personnel, were killed in the attacks, with another 13
injured. "The latest reports that we have is that Taliban
forces are now holed up inside the municipality building in
the centre of Khost city. They are surrounded by American
special forces and Afghan security forces, but a police
official has told Al Jazeera that the situation in general
is now under control and that Afghan forces are in control
of that whole area."
Pakistan 'captures Taliban hideout'
The Pakistani military claims to have captured a Taliban
rear-base - believed to be the stronghold of Mullah
Fazlullah, a pro-Taliban leader, and a centre for 4,000
fighters.
The hideout in Gatt Puchar, a mountainous region in the Swat
valley, was taken on Tuesday morning, with helicopters being
used in the assault. Troops were dropped into the area,
which has so far proved impenetrable by land.
Another military air attack on Tuesday killed at least eight
people in a house in Sara Mhora, in South Waziristan, on the
Afghan border, according to intelligence sources.
The assault is thought to have been carried out by a US
drone.
Athar Abbas, Pakistan military spokesman, said that 751
opposition fighters had been killed so far in their military
offensive in Lower Dir, Buner and Swat valley. Twenty-nine
security personnel had also been killed in fighting.
Abbas said that a "search and destroy operation" was now
underway.
Pakistan gears up to take out Taliban base
The Pakistani army is preparing for a military operation
against a key Taliban stronghold in Peochar valley in the
northwestern troubled region of Swat.
Some 15,000 Pakistani soldiers are now based near Swat
Valley and neighboring regions where an estimated 5,000
Taliban militants operate.
The development comes as hundreds of thousands of local
people have left their homes while human rights agencies
have called on the Pakistani army as well as the Taliban to
avoid a humanitarian crisis.
"Winning the war, but also the peace, in Swat can only be
achieved by minimizing civilian suffering." Human Rights
Watch said.
More than 500,000 are expected to abandon Swat valley to
join the 600,000 people displaced earlier from the region.
UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres said:
"This is a huge and rapidly unfolding emergency, which is
going to require considerable resources beyond those that
currently exist in the region."
