Alleged Drug Ties of Top Afghan Official Worry U.S.
It was a heated debate during the Bush administration: What to do about evidence that Afghanistan’s powerful defense minister was involved in drug trafficking? Officials from the time say they needed him to help run the troubled country. Today the former defense minister, Marshal Muhammad Qasim Fahim, stands a strong chance of becoming the next vice president of Afghanistan.
In his bid for re-election, President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan has surrounded himself with checkered figures who could bring him votes: warlords suspected of war crimes, corruption and trafficking in the country’s lucrative poppy crop. But none is as influential as Marshal Fahim, his running mate, whose trajectory in and out of power, and American favor, says much about the struggle the United States has had in dealing with corruption in Afghanistan.
As evidence of the tensions, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton bluntly told Mr. Karzai that running with Marshal Fahim would damage his standing with the United States and other countries, according to one senior administration official.
Now, the problem of how to grapple with Marshal Fahim adds to the complexity of managing an uneasy relationship with Mr. Karzai. Partial election results show Mr. Karzai leading other contenders, but allegations of fraud threaten to add to the credibility problems facing a second Karzai-led government.
Russia: Concern Over North Korean Missile Testing
Moscow is concerned that future North Korean missile tests could go awry, sending debris into Russian territory, and it is considering using surface-to-air missiles to protect against such “failed test launches,” Gen. Nikolai Makarov, the chief of Russia’s general staff, said during a visit to Mongolia on Wednesday. Moscow has stepped up its criticism of North Korea since May, when the North carried out an underground nuclear test, though Russian officials stopped short of endorsing the toughest sanctions favored by Washington. General Makarov told the Interfax news service that a battalion equipped with an antimissile system was already deployed near Russia’s short border with North Korea. “We are concerned by the fact that the site in North Korea, where it carries out its nuclear tests, is located quite close to the Russian border,” he said.
In Iran, Leader vows firm action over jail crimes
The Leader of the Islamic Revolution has stressed that no rights of Iran's post-election prisoners will be trampled upon.
Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei moved to address concerns over the issue, saying that the Islamic establishment will not fall short of expectations in dealing with those who have mistreated the detainees.
In reference to the allegations of jail rape and alleged evidence of the issue, Ayatollah Khamenei said that in dealing with issues of such "great sensitivity" the authorities should not act based on "speculations and rumors".
"In issues with such great sensitivity, the Judiciary should judge based on irrefutable evidence; even if there is evidence supporting certain rumors, such evidence cannot be a base for judgment," Ayatollah Khamenei added.
Acknowledging that crimes have also taken place during a raid on a Tehran University dormitory, Ayatollah Khamenei said "a special file has been opened on the matter so that the wrong-doers are punished regardless of their [governmental] posts."
The Leader, however, warned against publicizing the matter with political motivation, saying "an order has been imposed since the initial days for careful, determined action on the matter."
Abbas to hold elections if Hamas talks fail
Acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas says he will call for a parliamentary election in January should reconciliation efforts with the rival Hamas movement fail. "We are still offering the same proposal, but if it's refused, then the sole alternative is to go to presidential and parliamentary elections," Abbas said, referring to a unity government including his Fatah party and Hamas.
Abbas made the remarks while speaking at the first meeting of the Palestinian National Council (PNC) in 13 years in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Wednesday, Reuters reported.
Hamas, however, says it will not accept a new poll in January unless a "package deal" is reached with Abbas's Fatah party. The rival factions have so far failed to agree on how the composition of a unity government would be.
