G8 issues Iran nuclear 'deadline'
Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, said Tehran could face
tougher action if it did not talk to the international community
over its atomic ambitions by the next G20 gathering.
"We sincerely hope that Iran will seize this opportunity to give
diplomacy a chance," a joint statement by the leaders currently
meeting in the Italian city of L'Aquila said, "At the same time we
remain deeply concerned over proliferation risks posed by Iran's
nuclear programme."
G8 leaders also said they were "seriously concerned" about recent
events in Iran, saying media restrictions and the detention of
foreign nationals were "unacceptable".
But Al Jazeera's Alan Fisher, reporting from the G8 summit, said the
US and Britain were keen to avoid action that could further
deteriorate relations with Iran.
Iran Warns Foes of ‘Crushing Response’ to Protests
US denies deal with Israel over settlements
The US has denied a report that it has reached a compromise that
would allow Israel to continue the construction of settlements that
has already begun.
"That report in that Israeli media outlet is inaccurate," State
Department Spokesman Ian Kelly said after the Maariv newspaper
reported that the Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak and US envoy
George Mitchell had struck such a deal.
"Our bottom line is the same. It has not changed," Kelly said.
"And that's that all parties in the region have to honor their
obligations," Kelly added.
On Wednesday, Maariv reported that the compromise was reached during
a meeting in London on Monday between the Israeli Defense Minister
Ehud Barak and the US President Barack Obama's special envoy to the
Middle East, George Mitchell.
However, President Obama has repeatedly called on the Israeli Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to stop building settlements.
Kelly also added that Mitchell plans to travel to Israel soon to
continue his discussions, saying that his talks with Barak on Monday
had been "good" and "productive." He gave no dates for the planned
visit.
Turkey to bring China's clashes to UNSC
The Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called for an
urgent end to the ethnic clashes in China's Xinjiang province, which
has killed over 150 people.
"The pictures [of the clashes] hurt everybody," Erdogan said.
"We expect the clashes, which are mounting to brutality, to be
stopped urgently," the Yeni Safak newspaper quoted Erdogan as saying
on Wednesday.
"We are following the situation with great anxiety and sorrow," he
added.
The Turkish Prime Minister noted that Uygur Turks are considered as
the bridge of "friendship and cooperation" between China and Turkey.
Erdogan said that those Chinese officials responsible for the
situation should be identified and a mechanism should be used to
bring them to justice.
"In 2009-2010 we are a non-permanent member of the UN Security
Council and in the name of humanity we will observe the same
duties," he added, hinting that his country will take the necessary
measures.
"Consequently, we should put the situation on the platform's agenda
and we will do that," Erdogan concluded.
G8 leaders adopt 3 statements on international agenda
Leaders of the Group of Eight countries adopted three statements on
problems of the international agenda: a political declaration that
includes, in particular, the Iranian issue, a statement on
non-proliferation, as well as a document on combating terrorism.
“The G8 leaders on the results of a working dinner at which they
discussed issues of the international agenda, adopted a single
political statement,” the official noted. “This is a single
statement that includes Iran’s problems,” the RF delegation’s
representative said adding that a number of the talks’ participants
proposed to consider a possibility of adopting a separate statement
on this issue.
US military frees five Iranian diplomats in Iraq: IRNA
‘The five Iranian diplomats abducted in Iraq were handed over by the
occupying US forces to the Iraqi prime minister Nuri al-Maliki,’ the
ambassador Hassan Kazemi Qomi said.
He said the five men would be handed over to the Iranian embassy in
Baghdad after meeting Maliki.
Their detention has long been a source of additional friction in the
hostile relations between Iran and its archfoe the United States.
‘The five Iranians were released and they are in the hands of the
Iraqi government. We should receive them in the next hours,’ a
source at the Iranian embassy in Baghdad said.
The US embassy in the Iraqi capital had no immediate comment.
