Top Reformers Admitted Plot, Iran Declares

Reports on Iranian Web sites associated with prominent conservatives said that leading reformers have confessed to taking velvet revolution “training courses” outside the country. Mohammad Ali Abtahi, who served as vice president in the reform government of former President Mohammed Khatami has confessed to provoking people, causing tension and creating media chaos.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s representative to the Revolutionary Guards, Mojtaba Zolnour, said in a speech Thursday that almost everyone now detained had confessed — raising the prospect that more confessions will be made public.

Khamenei aide: Mousavi is a US agent

Political tension in Iran following a tumultuous election ratcheted up a notch when a top aide of Iran's supreme leader called the country's main opposition figure a US agent and accused him of committing crimes against the nation in an editorial published Saturday. The editorial represents the first time that Mir Hossein Mousavi has been publicly called a US agent.

Shariatmadari, who is a close adviser to Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, added that Mousavi was trying to "escape punishment for murdering innocent people, holding riots, cooperating with foreigners and acting as America's fifth column inside the country." He called for Mousavi and former president Mohammad Khatami to be tried in court for "horrible crimes and treason."

The editorial added that there were "undeniable documents" proving Mousavi's foreign links.

Russia to Open Airspace to U.S. for Afghan War

The Russian government has agreed to let American troops and weapons bound for Afghanistan fly over Russian territory, officials on both sides said Friday. The arrangement will provide an important new corridor for the United States military as it escalates efforts to win the eight-year war.

Israel and U.S. to Hold Second Meeting

There has been tension for several months because the United States has been asking for a total freeze in building Israeli West Bank settlements, partly as a means of confidence-building with the Arab world. Israel rejected the request, saying it was inhumane to the settlers and insufficiently important to the conflict.

But Mr. Barak, who is the leader of Israel’s Labor Party and to the left of most of the rest of the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has been trying to bridge the gap. He told Mr. Mitchell on Tuesday that Israel could accept a freeze of three to six months on new building in all settlements outside Jerusalem if it were part of a broader endeavor that included a Palestinian promise to seek an end to the conflict as well as reciprocal steps from the Arab world.

Those steps would probably include permitting Israeli airplanes to fly in Arab airspace and establishing limited ties. Mr. Netanyahu has authorized Mr. Barak to put forward the plan but is waiting to see what he gets in return before offering any public endorsement, the official said.

In Lebanon, spying charges arrest two more men

Lebanese military intelligence sources have arrested two men, a father and his son, on charges of spying for Israel amid an anti-espionage crackdown in the country.

The National News Agency of Lebanon reported on Friday that the two men were arrested in Naqoura on the Lebanese-Israeli border south of the country.

The security forces said that they would continue to identify and arrest the people who spy for Israeli intelligence agencies.

Lebanon has arrested at least 60 people for spying and 100 others on suspicions of espionage since it launched its major crackdown on alleged spy networks almost three months ago. Most of the detainees were reportedly equipped with high-tech spying equipment.

Security forces in Lebanon say they have dismantled at least 25 Israeli spy cells throughout the country this year.
